seringkali pertanyaan itu muncul saat mulai menjajaki bidang geoteknik, namun begitulah memang komunitas perkumpulan geoteknikal engineer internasional pun menamakan diri sebagai “ISSMGE (International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering) nama ini mulai dipakai tahun 1997 sebelumnya bernama “ISSMFE”, ada dua bagian yaitu “Soil Mechanics” dan “Geotechnical Engineering”, lalu apa pengertian dan perbedaan dari dua bagian itu,

berikut adalah hasil browsing dan summary saya mengenaiĀ Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering..

Soil Mechanics is the study of soil and it’s properties. We study the structure of soil, how to classify different soils, test their properties, and then we study how stresses and loads are transferred through soils. Stresses are created when we applied some sort of load on soil like from a building or a road. We study how and how much soil settles when a load is applied to it. Also, we determine how to calculate horizontal stresses that a soil creates when it is up against a retaining wall. How water travels through soil is also covered in soil mechanics.

Geotechnical Engineering is the application of Soil Mechanics to the design of foundation systems, like shallow spread footings, pile foundations, caissons, and the design of retaining walls. A spread footing is typically a square or rectangular concrete pad that is typically about 3 feet deep that supports a column load from a building. A pile is a long slender structural element that is driven into the ground and ranges anywhere from 20 to 120 feet deep. They are used when the shallow soils can’t support whatever structure is being built. Caissons are round holes drilled into the ground, then filled with concrete and rebar to also support building loads. GE deals with the design of these different foundation systems using the principles of Soil Mechanics.

Geotechnical Engineers aren’t geologists and we don’t study rocks and principles, but we do design foundation systems. It’s a very common misconception
